The Albion dog, ‘Rose’ is inspired by the Brighton & Hove Albion Football Club’s first ever mascot by the same name. She was the dog of the club groundsman, Freddie Bates, and appeared on club postcards from 1913 and 1914. Sadly, her master was called up (as a reservist – former soldier) when the war began and he became the first Albion man to be killed (died of wounds received, Bethune, France, 24 Oct 1914). The image of the original Rose can be seen on North Reception.
